Transaction backup set Not to expire after 2 days why????

I created a Maintenance Plan to do a Transaction log backup hourly basis and set the backup set to expire after 2 days. Weeks later, old backups of every one hour in the extension of .trn are sitting on the hard drive in the installation directory and I have to manually delete them. Here is a screen shot of what the plan looks like ![alt text][1] What am I doing wrong? [1]: /storage/temp/712-tlog+maintenance+plan.jpg

Hi Ashok, 2 things to look out for: 1)In your Maintenance Cleanup Task ensure that the tickbox where it states "Include first-level subfolders" is ticked - but only do this if you have ticked "Create a sub-directory for each database" in your Backup Database Task. 2) Ensure that the account on which the job is running, has delete permissions to the folder where you are backing up the DBs to. Please let me know if this helps...

You welcome. Did you run the job again to see if the backups are deleting?

it is not advised to set expiry for backup sets.... these backup sets mays some times help you in disaster, there is no benefit of setting expiry for a backup set. what do u think

Nicely spotted Ramesh. I missed that completely. I do agree, the backups will be useless if they are sent to tape as they cannot be used a month later...

Hi ramesh,Nash I agree to maintain 1 month tlog backup but due to not enough space in Drive F because When Transaction log fails due to Daily Backup of Database not availability or switch the model from simple to full then it size raises too large actually size of db is **1 MB** but it raised to **85 GB** when it came from fails but again it normals..why? see the pic for your understanding ![alt text][1] [1]: /storage/temp/713-tlog+size+too+big+when+came+from+fail.jpg
