Database Archiving

Hello SSC, I need to archive some databases. Pl guide me with steps/methods for the task. I also need to have them archived in a way that they could be available on a days notice. If you can guide me with step by step process that would be much better. Thanks

The basic way, if you have a server that can act as your archive storage. 1. Take a backup of the database, give it a smart name like databasename_archive_archivedate.bak 2. Script out all dependencies for the database (users, jobs and so on) 3. Create a restore script for the database and save it. 4. Do a test restore with your script and use the .bak file you just created. 5. Run DBCC against the restored database and try a select, just to make sure. It's no fun when you archived a corrupt backup ;) 6. Create a zip file with above backup file and scripts, give it a nice name. 7. Move the zip to the archive server. If you have other backup solutions where you wan't to store the file, make sure that you can do a restore from that location without having to wait for days.
