We recently set up a sql server 2012 box. We do not have excel installed on the box. I am trying to set up an ssis package and use an excel data connection and am getting an error message. Does excel need to be installed on the box in order to set up an excel data connection?
I'd say it's not needed. "The Excel Connection Manager uses the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Jet 4.0 and its supporting Excel ISAM (Indexed Sequential Access Method) driver to connect and read and write data to Excel data sources." [More Information here.] :
I do not believe so, but you will probably still need to run any SSIS packages that use Excel data connections in 32 bit mode. If you are executing through a SQL Agent job, you'll need to go into the job properties and the step properties of the step using the connection. Go to the "Execution Options" tab and check the "Use 32 bit runtime" box. For debugging in BIDS, you can do this by going to the Project menu and selecting Properties. Click on "Debugging" and set the Run64BitRuntime Debug Option to "False".
