Why should I install 32bit SSRS on 64bit Server ?
Good morning everyone, I was asked to install some new SQL Servers 2008 R2 64-Bit Std. Edition but with 32 bit Reporting Services for a third party vendor application. I am not that familiar with SSRS. So my question is: is there any advantage when I install the 32bit version of SSRS? What are the main differences between both editions? Regards Dirk
Advantage of 32bit SSRS over 64bit? Not much other than memory suport. I have encountered a few vendors as well that require 32bit SSRS for their application to make API calls to it. When trying to use a 64bit SSRS the API calls would eventually cause SSRS to hang and have to be reset. I couldn't ever pinpoint the issue with the vendor app but it did not have the issue with the 32 version and their updated code that supported SSRS 2008 x64 no longer caused the timeouts. I would assume it had something to do with .Net. Unless it is a massive SSRS environment I don't know how much memory management comes into play for your SSRS environment between x86 and x64 SSRS.
I think your answer fits. It seems that the vendor app has it's own reporting frontend, e.g. API calls are done in the background.
