I have a server with 2 drives my C has a capacity 19.5 GB but only available 684 MB and E has a capacity of 48.6 GB and available 45.5 GB. My installation of SQL 2005 was done on E and my data is also stored on E. My question for you is I need to update to SQL 2008 can I do this update with my C at the current available space of 684 MB

You are better off searching for old temp files, old uninstall files for patches you will never uninstall, etc and free up some space on drive C:. Regardless of specifying drive E: for your program files and data, there are still some files written to C:. 684 mb may hold them and not generate an error but you still should clean up drive C: a bit.

If you run the Installation, the space requirements will be evaluated, and you will be informed if there is not enough space. Anyway the 684 MB is not too much.

Times change. It wasn't that long ago that 650MB would be considered huge for a harddrive total, much less 650 MB of free space.
