Migrating multiple data bases

how can we migrate multiple databases of server 2000 to server 2005 spread across various servers in single shot. asked in an interview

Upgrades are done one of two ways, you upgrade the server itself, or you move the database through backup & restore or detach & attach. You can script the install of 2008 and fire the scripts off on multiple 2000 servers, but, it's likely to run into issues. The mitigation would be to run the Upgrade Advisor and fix any issues that this tool raises.

But, upgrading servers in place, is dangerous. Most of the upgrades I do, I use the backup & restore mechanism so that I can leave the 2000 server available in case there's a problem.

+1 - whole server seems a reckless way to consider upgrading unless there are mitigating circumstances. Not sure on what the interview question was trying to discover, should you jump up and say NO WAY! or are they hoping to get someone to everything as fast as possible. My recommendation would be to do it db by db with the 2000 server online until hte last db is successfully upgraded and working.
