Setup problem - unable to generate ODBC DSN

Hard drive failure forced me to re-install SQL Server 2005 Devoper Edition on XP Pro machine. Now when I go into ODBC Data Source Administrator and try to add a System DSN with a SQL Server driver there is no SQL Server to connect to.

If I "force" a connection by typing in the name of my SQL Server it will create the DSN successfully, but then I won't be able start the database engine (or any other server type) of my SQL Server. When I boot off my W2K partition to Compare that instance of SQL Server (which works without any problem) to my XP installation they seem to be configured the same.

Just a few things to check...

  • Do you have you firewall on?

  • Is the SQL install the default instance? If not is the SQL browser service running

  • Have you enable TCP with configuration util?
