Add component to SQL 2005 SP3

I'm about to throw my mug through my monitor! I'm just trying to add Full Text Indexing to an existing server. It's SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition SP3. I definitely have the right edition of the DVD.

Attempt 1: I just ran the setup and it claimed I'm trying to change the edition and therefore need to run it from the command line with the parameter SKUUPGRADE=1.

Attempt 2: I tried that but then it said that, to add components to an existing installation, I have to go via Control Panel / Add Remove Programs.

Attempt 3: I did that and it said the install is blocked because the existing file versions are later than those I'm trying to install.

Do I have to uninstall every SP and update since the orginal RTM release (which is the DVD I have)? Am I just being thick?

Up to 2 attachments (including images) can be used with a maximum of 512.0 KiB each and 1.0 MiB total.

Not to you, but maybe it does to me (and others)... I'm currently working in a place where SQL Server 2005 is the main environment (no plan to migrate to 2008 just yet), and I don't want to find I have problems when / if They decide they need Full Text. Perhaps this is one of those situations where you should just install everything by default and just disable the bits you don't need right now... Come to think of it, that's what a predecessor at a previous place recommended. :-)

Excellent point, Fatherjack. I notice you said on another thread that you were at SQLBits. Damn, we probably walked straight past each other without realising it! Next time, we should do a question on here to find out who's going so we can meet up.

Same thing with the PASS Summit. Actually, that's one thing I'm not crazy about with this StackOverflow set up. It doesn't feel like it has the same ability to chat & discuss that more traditional forums have.

I'm closing this one. We've moved on to 2008 R2 so it just doesn't matter any more.

I'm really unsure of this answer, but I think what you need to do, or at least look into, is slipstreaming the SP with the install in order to use the install routine and get the SP in. There was discussion about this recently on SSC proper.

Thanks Grant, but it looks like slipstreaming only came in at SQL 2008: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sqltools/thread/0a23a4e1-8547-44d9-abb4-d4ac8022eedc I can't believe this is so hard to do! Actually it's probably easy when you know the trick. (That's what I'm hoping!)
