SSRS 2008 training useful for SSRS 2005 environment?

We are using SQL Server Reporting Services 2005 in our shop, and we have no immediate plans to upgrade. We would like to send some of our developers to training, but the only training available is for SSRS 2008.

Would they get any benefit out of this training? Or, are the differences so great that they would be wasting their time?

A separate question: can the Report Server database for SSRS 2008 reside on a SQL2005 database server?

Thanks for your help!

Steve

I would say yes if they are familiar with SSRS 2005 IDE and can practise before they 'go live'. Quite a bit of the general practice of solutions/projects/deployment/security/schedules etc is almost identical. There are a few features that are different in the BIDS environment and in deployment/configuration but nothing that someone cant ask about if they know what they are trying to achieve. There are some new features and controls that they wioll learn about that they wont be able to implement as 2005 didnt have them but there are plenty of sites where that applies. A good trainer should be able to reference back to 2005 functionality as it is encountered in the course so you can note where its different. If you have enough of you on the training you could even ask ahead of time that the content is specifically centred around the differences.

In the reverse, we are a 2005 shop that is upgrading to 2008 but with no training, having had 2005 training a few years ago.

I have no experience of a SSRS report server 2008 db on SQL 2005 server, instinct tells me this wouldnt float but the proof would be in the testing. You wont have a 2008 report server database unless you buy a SQL 2008 License and then you may as well deploy it all and go with SSRS 2008 on SQL Server 2008. Or are you buying licenses and down grading them?
