How do you get someone to know that you have commented?

If a comment thread between two people starts how do you get alerts to each other?

I have heard that you put @ infront of their name.

For me thats easy, @fatherjack should get to my alerts/messages

How about for Kev Riley? Is it @Kev, @Kev Riley or @KevRiley ???

The @ option doesn't seem to work. I did not get any notice of the comments, and I (officially) have no new responses.
