I have not worked with log shipping before but believe it is treated just as you would a cluster. Patch the secondary and then the primary. I had read that when you patch the secondary it will suspend the log shipping until the upgrade is complete.

Directly we can start patch to secondary server or we need to stop any service or process before start the patch.

With regards to SQL Server services/process no you would not stop any of those. If you have other processes connecting to that instance of SQL Server I cannot answer.

In addition to @Shawn_Meltion's answer, it is itself a question that why you are still on SQL Server 2008 RTM? The support for RTM ended on April 13, 2010. Moreover, in a controlled environment, Service Packs and Cumulative updates etc are tested/verified in test environment before putting it into production. If you have been following such kind of strategy, you would not have been asking questions about stopping and services/processes as it really depends upon the environment. You could face issues which no one else could have faced before. For e.g. your environment could have some third party softwares which may not support SP3. So there is no certain answer can be given against your question. I can only recommend that install it yourself on a test server (replica of production) and give a thorough check over. Also search the web for problems that others have experienced and wait until you are comfortable before installing on your production servers. This way you could be saving your time (like rebuild) as well as minimize the chances of any mishap.
