Installing a Service Packs for sql server 2008 Standard edition

All, I am planning to install latest service packs for sql server 2008 Standard database server. I have couple of questions for installalling the service pack SP3. There are no previous service packs installed on the server. 1) If i just a download from Microsoft the sp3 for sql server will it be enough?? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968382 2) what kind of issues can i expect, will there be any issues with the already developed code without the service pack? Has anybody encoutered any issue. 3) what kind o back up strategy should i have, so that just in case if I have to rollback the service pack installation Thank you !!

I haven't had any issues applying a service pack to SQL 2008. With SQL 2005 I ran into an issue with a couple of hot fixes due to the resource db not being in the same location as the Master database but so far the updates and SP's for 2008 have been seamless. If you have a development environment test them out there first. If you don't have a dev environment just make sure you have solid backups. To answer you question about what needs to be done, download the SP, backup db's, apply SP, validate everything works. Then backup Master again.
