Log shipping works by moving the transaction log from one place to another. It basically works through the backup/restore technology. Replication works one of three ways, through snapshots, which is almost like a backup & restore, but not exactly, that copies an entire database. Through transaction replication which takes each transaction and transmits that. Finally through Merge replication which marks changes from multiple locations and moves them back and forth between each other. This works through a different set of technology that requires you to define publishers, subscribers and distributors which manage the connections between the other two.
