[meta] Is retagging worth doing?

Personally, I think yes.

You can re-tag questions once you have 500 reputation points. And personally, I want to encourage it. If you see a question that is tagged with just "sql" or "t-sql", then it will help a lot if it gets retagged.

If in doubt, then guess. Someone else can always retag it again if you do a bad job.

But my question is: Is tagging something that general users should be doing, or should we be leaving it for moderators?

I think the tags system works quite well, but can be confusing for new people... I think retagging does generally help with keeping the site 'prim and proper' - and it looks like you've been doing a sterling job recently! :)

I've done it a few times, but only a few. I think it should probably be allowed by general users, but I'd say the threshold is a little low. Maybe make it 750 or 1000, show some dedication before you're allowed to modify other people's initial intent.

Yeah - I'm not sure how much control over that kind of thing the site owners have, and how much of it is just part of the StackExchange system.

I think it is a nice feature to be able to retag questions. It simplifies the selection of interesting questions if you have "correct" tags. I have done some "retagging" myself.

Yup, I agree. retagging is worth it if you notice someone missed a tag or the answers to a question mean a new tag is worth adding in order to let others find related answers and so on.

As to whether only moderators should do it? Well, it depends on the ratio of moderators' time to No of questions being received and/or answered. Are there enough people to deal with the work without it becoming their only job on the forum?

Putting a different question to the issue: Is it a problem that anyone over 500 rep can retag? Are we getting poor or misleading retags?

Definitely worth doing. However, for some reason I was able to retag properly, but now I can't. I keep getting Server Error 500. I've reported it on JIRA, but not had a response as yet. Does anyone else have this problem?

Thomas, I am experiencing the same problems and thought it was maybe firewall/caching problems.

Unlikely. I get it on my home & works machines, and using different browsers. It **was** working fine until a week or so ago!

I re-tagged a question earlier today with no issue.

I know others can do it with no problems - I occasionally leave comments on the questions asking for them to be re-tagged!
