We are looking to upgrade from SQL 2000 but thought you had to go via 2005 or 2008 and couldn't go straight do 2008 R2.

2000 SP4 is a supported upgrade path (though it appears the upgrade advisor is a little intermittent) - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393.aspx

Do you have a x64 instance of SQL 2000? According MSDN: [Version and Edition Upgrades][1] it should possible directly upgrade from SQL 2000 SP4 (x32) to SQL 2008R2. And also IA64. However there is no information about the x64 version of SQL Server 2000, so it could be an issue if you try to upgrade x64 instance. [1]: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393.aspx
