Need to sync SQL Server express with centralised Server for offline work
Hi everybody, I plan to develop an application based on SQL Server enterprise 2008 edition. I will have some mobile users that will go in some region where Internet is not available so they will have to work offline. Those users need to read and write the database. I think to install SQL Server express on their desktop and synchronise data back and forth with my central database when they will be at the office. Is there a tool availaible (from MS or third party) to achieve the synchonization. Do I need to use an another version of SQL Server (Standard ou Workgroup)instead of express? Thank you for your help.
there are a number of ways to do this. It's a pretty common problem. You can do this using replication, but it will be difficult. I'd look at the [sync framework] as a viable option. We used this at my last company for exactly the kind of work you're talking about. It worked well. :
You can setup the Central SQL Server 2008 Enterprise edition as a MERGE Replication Publisher. Then on the workstations desktop you can install SQL 2008 Express edition and setup it as MERGE Replication Subscriber. The Express version of SQL Server can act only as subscriber. Once the MERGE replication is set up, you can run select and update queries against any database.
