Migrating from older Query Analyzer (but not carrying the rest)

All, Introduction ============ As we know, a migration path for the old SQL Server 2000 Query Analyzer is to go to the SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) for SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008. But suppose I don't want hundreds of people installing that whole SSMS and those other features. All I really want is for my 500+ field folks to have a query tool for our production SQL Servers and I want to minimize cost and licensing. The database server side is where we spare no cost. Cost Effective ============== So, I took a look at SQL Server Express and SQL Server Management Studio Express. Sure they are free, but these products have way more than I want to put into the hands of 500+ field folks onto their laptops (because of too many potential Help Desk calls for non-essential actions). A Query Tool Solution??? ======================== So, is there not a query tool (i.e. "unbundled Query Analyzer") or do I have to take all the extras from the "Express" products, just so my 500+ users can do queries against the SQL Servers. OK. I'm not really interested in using their licensed Excel (on each laptop) to do an xquery via ODBC to the SQL Server. I'm looking for an "unbundle Query Analyzer" equivalent. Thanks for insights, Steve

You might look at RedGate SQL Prompt. Quest and I believe Idera also make similar products. Sapien also has some pretty good editors although I am not sure if they allow execution to a server through the software.

Redgate Prompt is a pretty good tool as mentioned by @meltondba. A quick google (other search engines are available) I found.. [Squel][1] [Toad][2] Also, depending on your users base, you could try [Linq][3] [Ref site][4] [1]: http://versabanq.com/products/squel.php [2]: http://toadforsqlserver.com/index.jspa [3]: http://www.linqpad.net/ [4]: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5170/sql-server-management-studio-alternatives

You should take a look at [Atlantis Interactive]( http://www.atlantis-interactive.co.uk/). They have a product called SQL Everywhere that might do the trick for you. Talk about cost effective, you can't beat the price. FREE!! If you end up using the tool give @matt whitfield a huge thanks for creating it.

Atlantis SQL Everywhere is a good query editor that leaves out most of the database administration tooling - [ http://www.atlantis-interactive.co.uk/products/sqleverywhere/default.aspx][1] You might give it a try to see if it would be good for your users. If the goal is just to allow the 500 or so users to query the database, perhaps a web-based tool would meet your needs. A little less software on the client machine, and only a single instance of the query tool to maintain. Something like myLittleAdmin comes right to mind, though it has a lot of administrative capability your users would have to wade through. They have a live demo you can play around with - [ http://livedemo.mylittleadmin.com/livedemo/][2] I'm sure there are others that might do nicely.
