How to receive return value from stored procedure in SSRS

In my SSRS report, I have a dataset that calls a stored procedure. The stored procedure returns a large amount of data, and returns a return value to indicate the quality of the data. How can I obtain that return value from the SSRS dataset and use it in the SSRS report?

One option given here, is to wrap the SP in another SP and manipulate the return value into a standard output field.

You mean add the output parameter as an extra field of the recordset? That can be done within the original SP, don't need a second SP to do this. This is undesirable because the recordset of many thousands of rows will all contain the same value - very inefficient.

To get the return value you would need a 2nd SP. I agree this is very inefficient.
