Could someone please explain the differences between a hot backup and a cold backup and the benefits associated with each. Many thanks.
Hot generally means the database is up and running.
Cold generally means the database is shutdown.
Benefits to the cold backup are largely around not having to worry about the database changing during the backup process. Newer version of Oracle have largely solved this issue as you can imagine most production databases now are 24x7 uptime and of course need to be backed up.
