Differences between $ORACLE_HOME and $ORACLE_BASE ?

Please could someone explain the differences between $ORACLE_HOME and $ORACLE_BASE to me. Thank you in advance for the answer.

Briefly, "The ORACLE_HOME is an environment variable which is used to set and define the path of Oracle Home (server) Directory."

And ORACLE_BASE is an optional environment variable that could be used as the root for ORACLE_HOME, in which case it can also be use for your other Oracle products and versions, to group them together (the implication is that the software kits will look for this environment variable).
