What are the two types of tables involved in producing a star schema and the type of data they hold ? Thank you.

Is there some specific reason you haven't approved the answer? Do you have some reason to believe the answer isn't reasonably correct? Did you read the Wiki article?

There are, typically, dimension tables and fact tables.

The dimension tables's PKs are typically elements of a giant, compound PK on the fact table(s). However, physical characteristics, access methods, storage methods, etc of your database software might suggest alternative physical implementations of a star schema.
