I need help tracking something down, I'm getting several connections where in Enterprise Manager it says:

OS User Name: Example$ <-- Example is the machine name.

There is NO user named Example$, where is this coming from?....

Is there a host example or an operating system user example anywhere?

This is I believe Operating System authentication. i.e. the user authenticaton is done by the OS. You can setup kerberos authentication to directly authenticate users in a windows AD with Oracle using this approach. No password is required as the authentication token is obtained from AD.
