Whats the best database modelling tool out there?

I'm not immensely comfortable managing my database as a set of SQL scripts so in an ideal world I'd like for the code to be hidden from me when I make schema alterations. Something that lets me reverse engineer an existing database and make edits to a graphical interface would fit the bill. Even better if it could allow me to insert data using the same UI. Is there anything out there that does this well?

I pretty sure that the consensus is Embarcadero's ER Studio is the best in the commercial world. ERWIN is probably second but CA's acquisition pretty much was the death knell to it. On the other hand Embarcadero's ER Studio development is alive and well and continutes to innovate and improve solidifying it's postion as the best ER product.

In the commercial world, probably CA ERwin

From Free software, MySQL Workbench (which only really works well with MySQL as a target database, but is handy for a graphical presentation of your schema regardless of the backend ).

'Best' is such a subjective word. Now I work for a vendor, so take this with a grain of salt...

If you want value, then Quest's Toad Data Modeler is worth taking a look-see. Less than $500, you get physical and logical modeling, reverse engineers, WYSIWYG HTML reports, and alter scripts for all of the major RDBMS.

It seems that most orgs have standardized on CA's Erwin, but I see a lot of ER Studio and believe it or not, Oracle Designer...which has been deprecated for the $3,000 user edition of SQL Developer Data Modeler.
