Tail Log Backup?

Hello Everyone, I have one problem with backups. I have taken Full backup,Differentail Backup, Transactional Backup.Now I am trying take Tail log backup by selecting the option “Back up the tail of the log, and leave database in the restoring state”. But i am not able to take this backup ,I am getting the error” (Microsoft.Sqlserver.smoExtended). Please can any one explain what is this error and how to reslove this?? Thanks Vijay

What's the error? And are you doing the backup through the GUI? What version of SQL Server? What version of the GUI?

You can't take a tail log backup after you've started the database restore process. You take a tail log backup before you start the restore process. Basically the tail backup is an additional log backup that captures the transactions completed since the last log backup.

True. However, given the description under Tail-Log Backups in MSDN, the taking of a tail log is typically a precursor to a RESTORE operation...

Hello Grant, I dint start the restoring process, I am trying to take the tail log backup but not able to proceed.

can use please specitfy the exact error by using xp_readerrorlog.
