How to upgrade SQL express 2005 to SQL express 2008 in Windows 7 64 bit machine

How to upgrade SQL express 2005 to SQL express 2008 in Windows 7 64 bit machine? I have tried with SQL server express 2008 R2 edition. Normal upgradation is not working, but if I uninstall SQL express 2005 and install SQL express 2008 , then it is working fine. Note: This problem occures only in Windows 7 64 bit machine. in Windows 7 32 bit machine it works fine. Please suggest me , how i should upgrade in windows 7 64 bit machine and also why it is a problem only in 64 bit machine?

Well, if it works by uninstalling first, then I would do that, really - and export / import your databases as appropriate. Or you could install 2008 as a new named instance, and keep them both running at the same time.

As for why it differs in between 64 and 32 bit, I wouldn't know, but I do know that I still run 32 bit windows because so much in 64-bit is half baked (for example, complete lack of edit-and-continue in visual studio 2008 or 2010).

There are a number of requirements to make sure SQL Server runs on Windows 7. I suggest you take a look at these links:

  1. SQL Server on Windows 7

  2. Installing SQL Server Express on on Windows 7
