backup transfer on ftp

Hi, We have a project whose backups are taken at a different location and passed on to us on a bi weekly basis. However we wish to take the backups at our location and so as to restore in case of any downtime and not be dependent on the offshore team .There exists a maintenance plan in sql 2008 which needs to be amended to achieve this. what is a better option, using the current ftp service which exists in the database machine or on a different machine? any suggestions on encrypting the backup files?thanks

Does answer your direct question, but for a stand-by server I would look at log shipping (i.e. shipping all transaction logs, and restoring them as they arrive) rather than just transferring FULL backups, or similar, daily / weekly.

When we have done this before we have used ZIP to compress and then PGP to encrypt and put the resulting files in a folder which is then polled and pulled from the remote machine, but I expect that nowadays SQL has inbuilt FTP that can do the whole job for you.
