SQL Backups strategy

Hi All,

I was hoping someone could offer me some advice at possible approaches to a backup solution for my company. I am looking after the development and testing environements for a software company and have about 40 SQL Servers half running 2005 the other half running 2008.

All of the servers will require the ability to have multiple backups at different stages during an upgrade (These could possibly be differential), preferably with the abilty for the person backing them up to attach details to the backup. Some of the servers will also require weekly backup jobs.

I'd also like to have all the information regarding the backup sets names dates and size recorded in a central location to help manage the backups.

Anyone got any advice on how I should achieve this or examples I can adapt?

See if your supervisor will allow you to buy RedGate SQLBackup. It will provide you with a great management console for keeping track of and scheduling a host of backup scenarios. I use it, and it allows for backups across the network to different servers (disk to disk). teecee72

Any of the third party backup tools can do this. Or you can write something yourself which grabs all the data from the msdb database and import it into a central location.
