[meta] Pundit Badge

Out of curiosity, what does it really take to earn the Pundit badge? I know what the description says, but only see that two people have earned it. I know there are a great deal more than two people that have left more than 10 comments. So what does it really take to earn that badge?

@CirqueDeSQLeil: You have three comments to this question. Just add seven more, and then we'll see what happens to your badges :)

maybe the comments have to be political?

@Kev Riley Yes, Thomas earned it a bit ago, but from the activity it is difficult to confirmn whether 10 comments per thread assessment is correct

we can raise it with the admins and/or OSQA guys...sorry as a mod I don't have **that** much power!

The pundit badge is 10 comments overall. I believe that's different of how it worked on SX, but this was created before we even had the concept of score on comments. The thing is, whoever had more than 10 comments at export time never got the badge.

@hernani Do you mean upvoted 10 comments? I became a user of the site before the move, and I surely had more than 10 comments I left, but it is possible that I did not use "I like this comment" feature 10 times yet at the time. This is why I was surprised when one day I was greeted with the message that I have earned a pundit badge because it is described as "left 10 comments". If left 10 comments means used "I like this comment" feature 10 times then it might make sense. This is why we only have but 3 users who earned this badge.

@CirqueDeSQLeil - I actually read it as 'if you had 10 comments when we moved then you will never get the badge' - I guess it's not clear... :/

If you're looking for a SuperUser who's not a competitor to Red Gate, what about @FatherJack - he's an official "Friend of Red Gate", and has the 10k rep... ...perhaps this should be another question!

Thing is hernani said that if you had already written 10 or more comments before the move to OSQA then you would not get the badge?

@CirqueDeSQLeil - Yep, there are many many things that could be fixed. Let's count ourselves lucky that now the rep... sorry, karma display now shows k like SE. Because that was **really** important to me.

@Matt and @Cirque, What do you guys propose for the Pundit award, X comments with Y score? Another thing, I told this once in some other question, but here it goes again. It would be nice that one of you guys could ask for superuser privileges, there's no active superuser, and there's a lot that could be tweaked in the admin backend. I can do it myself, but I won't do it without authorization.

I would have to disagree that it is 10 comments overall or it is just not working at all. I have left 10 comments on a single answer as well as 10 comments on a single question as well as 10 comments overall for the question and answer(s) as well as have more than 10 comments overall. This all being since the export.

@Oleg, that is a plausible explanation at this point. I can certainly say though that if it means having written ten comments - it doesn't work as planned.

But you should still get it for those comments after the move. I can understand not getting the badge for the comments prior to the move, but the counter should at least be working for comments post move.

It looks like 10 up votes on comments doesn't do the trick either. I have upvoted good relevant comments (12 of them) today and notta.

@matt - oh in that case, there will be a bunch of people in that category. And it still seems like it is something that could be fixed.

I can't argue with that. I would like the login to be fixed. I have to relink every time I login. That is true aggravation. ;)

Ouch, nasty... I just get busted by the editor. Most times I answer questions I end up typing them up in notepad and pasting them in...

Here's another interesting one, some days my first vote of the day gives me a warning that I only have 10 votes left, other days it comes after 10+ votes. That seems odd to me but is not a big deal.

@hernani - We have asked, actually. But, if I were red gate, I wouldn't want someone from joe public to be super user - I would want them to be moderators, which we used to be before the switch. There is just too much that could be risked by letting one of us become a super user. I mean, I am a competitor to red gate. I am perfectly friendly with them, and they are with me, but I wouldn't go giving them admin rights on my web site and I wouldn't expect them to give me admin rights on theirs. I think, with the pundit badge, it should be what it says on the badges screen - namely 'left 10 comments'. I.e. if you have commented 10 times or more, you have the badge...

Ok, fair enough. I'm going to run some scrip to award people with that problem then and stop this confusion.

I agree, there needs to be somebody acting as a superuser (Matt ;) ). I think what is wanted is a very clear understanding of the achievements. If the achievement were to be 10 comments after you reach X points, then so be it. Or if it is supposed to be 10 overall comments on any thread, then so be it. When it appears to not be working as described, then it causes questions to be asked. In the case of the Pundit badge, I have posted a ton of comments since posting this thread trying to find exactly what works.

Whoever has more than 10 comments, will be awarded automatically after the next comment. Even if he already has 1000 comments.

SuperUser may be excessive... but then the natural choice would be Steve Jones IMHO - though he has a ton on his plate now. Moderators are good, say those in the 10K + range and perhaps backed by the community (don't need 50 of them).

I believe that it means 10 comments per single thread, which could be either question or answer. This will explain why not too many people have it.

10 comments in one thread seems incredibly excessive. Its rare to see 10 comments total in a thread here, much less 10 by one person.

@CirqueDeSQLeil I remember when I received it I was kinda surprised as the message congratulating me with getting the bagde did not really coinside with my commenting activity at that time. Usually, when we get the badge, the info message becomes available right away.

would that mean that the question is a separate thread and each single answer is a separate thread?

@CirqueDeSQLeil This is very difficult to deduce from examining activity. Looks like this question has become a great brain teaser. Lets see if anyone can figure out correct answer to this one :)

@Oleg - thanks for the input. I guess we always have the option of testing on our end to try and figure it out.

i think it's just another very opaque or non functioning aspect of osqa. they've been working on it a lot judging from their comments on meta - but i must say i haven't seen a lot change - for example the editor has had chrome 6 issues for about a month... is anyone else slightly frustrated?

It doesn't seem to be 10 comments on a question thread. It doesn't seem to be 10 comments on an answer thread. And it doesn't seem to be 10 cumulative comments on a question and it's associated answer(s) thread. It seems to be like the Tootsie Roll pop dilemma - the world may never know.
