[meta] Is there a new voting limit?

Hi, I noticed that when I place a vote, a new message pops-up telling me that I have n votes left today (11 maximum per day?). I was vaguely aware of a voting limit, but never encountered it until this message started popping up. Is this message box a new feature that has been introduced, or has a limit been set/changed recently?

when the box pops up for me it says 30 per day - but i think it means 30 in the last 24 hours, rather than per day but, then again i've been doing lots of voting recently sorry for poor formatting - on the phone because I'm at sql bits...

You must get more votes for being so high up karma wise. re: sql bits - lucky bugger! :)

well i used up all my votes for now, it was 30. strange thing is the pop-up says to consult the faq, but there is no mention of a voting limit, other than a max of 200 points for a question/answer.

It's been kind of weird. I've hit it a couple of days recently, but not consistently, so I'm not sure how it's being measured.

The only way to achieve consistency is by implementing it consistently with what the FAQ page says, namely limit the number of votes to 30 per day (not the 24 hour period as it will always lead to confision). Basically, pick some suitable time when the date changes, something like midnight GMT and allocate 30 votes until midnight of next day without 3 milliseconds. Start new period 3 milliseconds later. This way there will be no ambiguity.

@Oleg - So you suggest a static 24 hour period as opposed to a sliding window?

@Blackhawk-17 I believe that it might reduce the ambuguity. Say I vote 5 times at each of the 3 morning hours: 9, 10, and 11. Then I use remaining 15 votes some time in the afternoon. Try one more vote, get a greeting that I don't have any votes left and go home. Next morning, I start voting just before 10 AM and at the first vote I am greeted with then message that I have 9 votes left. This might make me think that there is a new limit, because the FAQ page states 30 per day, and as far as I am concerned, today is the new day :)

I am seeing the same sort of inconsistent behavior as Grant.

@CirqueDeSQLeil Looks like Chris provided a correct answer, which resolves the mystery completely. It is 30 votes per 24 hours (sliding) and votes on comments are counted (this is probably what we dismiss) :)

It's 30 votes per 24 hours, regardless of karma, and you should start seeing warnings when you're down to 10 votes. Be warned that the limit might also take into account voting on comments, not just answers! It's something that the OSQA team are aware is less-than-ideal, and will probably try to make more configurable (i.e. give the option to measure votes per-calendar day vs. per-24-hours) at some point in the future. In the meantime, I'm happy to push that limit up if people are consistently being stung by it?

Might be an idea to see if there's a way of allowing people with higher karma to have more votes... I don't think that should be too difficult to implement!

@Camassey This is the key!
Be warned that the limit might also take into account voting on comments, not just answers!
This is why we get confused and think that the counter is less then 30. It actually works as expected, 30 votes per 24-hour sliding window (questions, answers and comments votes are all counted). All it will take to address the ambiguity is updating the text accordingly (change per day to per 24 hours). Thank you.

I've run out of votes 4 times this week - but then I tend to vote up a lot of people to try and encourage growth...

@everyone - I've pushed the voting limit up to 40 votes per 24 hours. Let me know if you're still being stung, and I'll look at it again. @ThomasRushton - that's an excellent idea! I've submitted a feature request to the [OSQA Jira]( http://jira.osqa.net/browse/OSQA-468), so feel free to upvote it. @Oleg - Thanks for pointing that out - I'll go and clear that up now.
