SQL Server Small Business Server 2008 Limitations

Hello,

I have a bit of an unexpected situation that I'm hopeful that someone can help me with.

Client bought Small Business Server Premium that has SQL 2008 and they are able to install SQL anywhere on the domain but only have one installation of this.

So they have their SQL Server installed with Reporting Services, Anaylsis services on a separate server to their Domain Controller and Application server.

What I want to do is have the SQL Server just as a database server and install the Reporting and Anaylsis server onto the Application server (apparently this will help with sharepoint AX Enterprise Portal integration, well it did on my lab anyway).

We tried to do this ideal config on the sitebut got a message about SQL not being suitable for the OS but that really means there is SQL Server on another server in the domain, the SBS limitation.

We didn't uninstall the old reporting services and analysis services first but did stop their services but we still couldn't move the components to the the application box.

My question is, are we trying something that just isn't possible and should our client have got the SQL Standard edition?

Many thanks in advance.

The problem is that you're trying to spread the instance of SQL Server across multiple servers. If you put SSRS and the Database Engine on separate servers, you need a separate licence for both machines.

So in your situation, it would be best to uninstall SSRS/SSAS, and put them all on the one machine. Even if you don't have the services started, it knows they're there. (I say 'uninstall', but really I mean 'just leave it on the one machine').

If you have a separate installation purely for DR purposes, then that's considered okay with only one licence, but I think the checking that SBS is doing may not let you do that.
