Can I install SQL Server 2000 on Windows 7

I have an application that runs on SQL Server 2000. We have clients that use the Personal Edition or MSDE on their XP machines. If we upgrade to Windows 7, or get new Windows 7 clients, can we install SQL Server 2000 on them?

SQL Server 2000 can be made to work on Win7, I just managed to do it myself. The posters above are correct about the login issues, you cannot use windows login because of the changes made to the win7 operating system. You will have to go with sql server login and you have cleared one major hurdle. Next, apply the SP4 SQL Server patch. Not sure why this is needed, however, I couldn't communicate with with the database through java's jdbc connector until this patch was applied. Third, SQL Server services will not want to turn on through the Service Manager utility. Several options, the Enterprise Manager can be used to turn them on, or you can go to the Windows Task Manager and manually turn these services on that way. It seems something broke between the Service Manager and Services. Once those steps are done, you should be able to communicate. So have fun!

I will add the little bit I've seen with it. Don't expect to patch up to 2282. I'm not sure at what point it breaks between SP4 and 2282 though.

It won't work if you're using 64 bit version of Windows 7, however if it's for testing something you could create a virtual server using a generic app like Oracles virtualbox ( http://www.virtualbox.org/), install an older 32 bit OS on there and then install SQL Server 2000 onto it.

a- 1-Enter gpedit.msc into the start menu and hit Enter. 2-Now navigate to User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Application Compatibility. Then on the left side under Setting double click on Turn off Compatibility Assistant. 3-Now click on Enabled then click on Apply and OK then close out of Local Group Policy Editor. b-go to services and disable Program Compatibility Assistant Service c-restart the pc d-go to SQL installation folder and choose edition . Then run setup.bat NB do not run autorun.exe bc you will get error. Please install SQL 2000 sp4 when the installation is complete. It will work without any problem.Just follow my steps. Because Windows 7 is 64 bit, the 64bit windows never install SQL server 2000. because sql server is 32bit system. If Windows 7 32bit, its install SQL server 2000. Ramakrishnan ramkittu19@gmail.com

SQL Server can be install on Windows 7, with a lot of compatibility issues, but works in the end though. You can use it locally on the same machine, and it runs SQL Server fine. The only problem is that SQL Server Agent is totally not compatible (as windows says) and cannot run it. Thus, you cannot run SQL Server in a network as a service to client software accessing data from a network server.
