Can I install SQL Server 2000 64bit on Windows 2008 64 bit?

I have to install old SQL Server 2000 on machine with 16GB RAM and Windows 2008. I went through scenario where I installed SS2000 32 bit but, database server process did not want to utilize more than 3,6GB memory. So I got tired to install 64 bit version of database server but without success. Just on the beginning of installation I got message "The version of the file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running". Do you have any thoughts? Cheers

You can install it, but but according to some source it has some compatibility issues... The links below may help [Link 1][1] [Link 2][2] [1]: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlservermigration/thread/19b6261d-1b62-449b-b214-073af8fc5d89 [2]: http://www.jeffgaroutte.net/post/2008/11/03/Windows-2008-and-SQL-2000.aspx

Hi Jonlee, Thank you for your links, I read them carefully and unfortunately none of them is describing the issue which I have with both 64bit installations. I know that there is possibility to install SS2k 32bit on Win2K8 because I went through it but had problem with memory utilization by database above 4GB. I thought installing of SS2k 64bit resolve it but not. Kind regards, Bartolo

Check out the AWE API. I'm not sure how something like this would work on a 64 bit system though as it was designed for supporting lots of RAM in a 32 bit environment. Still, it's worth a look I think: [AWE API][1] Also, there may be a way to instruct the application to ignore the 32 bit limit. This is an interesting read as well: [Interesting Read][2] Hopefully something in there will help you. Good luck! yes you can happly install 64 bit sql server 2008 on windows server 2008 enterprise version. as there are some compatabilty issue. please install sp1 of sql server and windows service patch.............. really your users fell feel the appication 22- 36 % faster. it is rally nice, we had changed on our server, but you will be getting windows compatability issue's in the server,\ that does not make a problem in the server or its performance. specificially you will encounter compatability error's with SQL SERVER AGENT SERVICE :)
