SQL server 2008 R2 Setup failure
I am trying to install sql server 2008 on my Windows XP and got the error message: TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure. ------------------------------ SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error: Could not load file or assembly '0 bytes loaded from System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. Error code 0x84B10001. ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ Please help!! Thanks, June
@junsqlscreen Is it possible that your .NET Framework 2.0 installation on that Windows XP box is corrupted? The version of the System.dll and key token appear to be correct, but you can check the file size as well from cmd prompt:

Have you looked for a more detailed error message in the Setup log? [How to: View and Read SQL Server Setup Log Files][1] [1]:

The error came up just after I clicked the setup.exe and the log file has not been generated yet. Thanks June
Are you trying to install the x32 or x64 version of SQL Server?
Is this installation using Microsoft's Web Platform Installer (WPI), or using files directly downloaded from Microsoft? I had problems when using WPI and I ended up installing the components it recommended individually and in the following order: 1. CLR Types 2. Native Client 3. Shared Management Objects 4. SQL Server 5. Management Studio
That's a bunch of files and folders I downloaded with the embedded product code.
The pre=requisite of .NET framework 3.5 Sp1 & Windows Installer 4.5 is a must before you attempt to pass through the SQL Server setup installation, so ensure you have installed these versions before attempting another trial. I have seen this on my 64 bit environment,due to media corruption and replaced the files with fresh installation worked like charm.
I got another machine and installed all the windows updates. Then it worked. Thanks everyone.
Download the SQL Server image again from the original location, and then rerun the Setup program. If you installed SQL Server over a computer network, install it again from a local drive, and then rerun the Setup program. Rename the Setup.
