[meta] How to best merge in another site into Ask.SSC?

Hello, as some of you might know, there is another SQLServer Q&A site hosted at stack exchange, [ ask.sqlteam.com][1], and they would like to merge the two communities. The merge is planned for the beginning of the next week, and we would like to get some feedback on how to best do that so existing users common to both sites can be merged properly. Also, if you have any technical concerns about the merge, please share them here, and I'll try to do my best to answer them. EDIT: The merge will be complected in the next few days, I've noticed that one of the biggest concerns is about tag names. Would like to hear your opinion about which sqlteam tags have to be renamed during the merge. [1]: http://ask.sqlteam.com/

@hernani - Any update on this?

We're sorry for postponing this process so long. It's about to be completed. Please see the edit in the question and give me your best thoughts. Thanks.

@hernani - Erm, hmm. I'm not sure exactly how you want us to let you know - are we just supposed to copy and paste 4 and 11 pages of tags, respectively, into an excel sheet and provide a mapping or something? Is there any movement on mods having any powers (for example merge tags)?

yeah, I would support a mods function to merge accounts on request from registered user. I was thinking this was going to happen after we had spoken to RG ... maybe my misunderstanding. I think the cold I have is giving me hallucinations. Are all 'dormant' SQL Team accounts being aggregated into 1? ie ST accounts that have asked a question and got the answer and then run away.

@Matt Whitfield, we have uploaded CSV files for the tags from both SSC and SQLTeam to , so hopefully that will make it a lot easier than pages and pages of cut and paste. There is no motion on giving moderators the ability to merge tags, and we will most likely only be able to give it to admins. A possible solution would be to add finer grain control over which roles receive which privileges, but that is well beyond the scope of this merge. We're starting another meta thread to cover some specific merge issues. Let's continue there.

Wonderful idea. Welcome ask.sqlteam.com members!! And Thanks for the heads up =) your really surprised us with the last migration! Edit: I see some users that are members in both sites. What are you going to do with them? Add thier karma and merge them in to a single user?

I'm probably biased, but I would like to see us maintain our versions of tags rather than others, eg 'sql-server-2005', over 'sql-2005'. Not being a duplicated user, I have no preference for handling user accounts, but I guess rep/karma accrued elsewhere should be added? Questions - just throw them in - if there are any dupes then the mods can close. (sorry guys speaking on behalf of all mods there....)

Good point about the tags. That would probably not be handled by the import process since it's a bit of a sensitive matter to be handled by a computer, and there would be the risk of merging the wrong tags or skipping correct ones, but we can put some effort on a basic merge tool that you guys can use to merge tags after the merge.

The only option that occurred to me was to import all users, at least the ones that have any sort of contribution, like a question or answer or comment.

Actually yes that's a better idea, otherwise you'd end up with orphaned questions/answers/comments! Sorry not thinking straight - Friday afternoon!!!

And yes, rep/karma and badges should be maintained, the question is more related with user details, and which users are which, etc.

@Hernani - are you planning to take all users or just those with recent (6mths?) activity and/or min rep levels

I believe the best approach to doing this would be to set up another OSQA site, temporarily. Let the mods here log in to that site, and clean up tags (so we could do with a rename tag function for that). EDIT -> actually, we will probably need merge tags too... After that process is complete, merging the data from one to the other should be a lot simpler. I'm not sure how the question IDs work, but I'm hoping that you guys will have a process for handling those. Karma should be added together from both sites, as should repeatable badges. Non-repeatable badges should not be duplicated i.e. something akin to -> DELETE temposqa.badgeawards FROM temposqa.badgeawards INNER JOIN askssc.badgeawards ON temposqa.badgeawards.badgeID = askssc.badgeawards.badgeID AND temposqa.badgeawards.userOpenID = askssc.badgeawards.userOpenID INNER JOIN temposqa.badges ON temposqa.badgeawards.badgeID = temposqa.badges WHERE temposqa.badges.repeatable = 0 When that process is complete, I think we'll be merged and happy...

Yeah, what he said (points to all other answers)! seriously though I agree with: merge tags to be 'ours' if duplicated sum rep for users in both camps how about creating a generic "SQLTeam" user that gets 1 gabillion questions transferred from all 1rep users at SQLTeam?

I like the 1 rep user idea....

Before you change the name for the 1reps, the original name (unless googleuser) might help identify dupes as I've seen many post questions on both sites--never to return :)

How about suffixing the questions with " - originally asked by on www.SQLTeam.com" ?

I've also noticed since ask.sqlteam.com was converted a few of my answers were "lost" mainly those with 3 or more up votes. Did anyone notice this happening on this site when it was converted?

has ask.sqlteam.com already merged into here ? It seems that it is still at http://ask.sqlteam.com/

I just created an account here today since it was announced that the sqlteam site would be shutting down, do the usernames or real names from both sites need to match for things to import properly?

Hi Jason, As you will have read above we are hopeful that the user account details will get merged where there are duplicates. Obviously some people may have differences that would prevent auto-merging as it were. My suggestion would be to continue with this account until SQLTeam has closed and we have the site content merged and if you dont see a jump in your rep when your other account is brought over then post a [meta] question and one of us will get on it
