[meta] Creating tags

Recently I've noticed a lot more new tags being created, especially by new users (with karma of 1), generally if they don't know what the purpose of tags are and/or can't find the right ones for their question. In the 'old' SE version of ASK, there was a minimum level of rep needed before tag creation became an option - it was just a mechanism to ensure that a modicum of commitment to the site was needed, before diluting the content down. Apparently, [unlimited tag creation is how OSQA was designed to work][1], although there is now the ability to limit tag creation, it is 'off' by default. So before I go asking the admins to turn this on I thought I'd better canvass the opinion of the users - so what do we think? What level of rep did we need before? What level of karma do we think is appropriate? [1]: http://meta.osqa.net/questions/2155

Do it. Do it soon. It was 100 - [ http://serverfault.com/faq][1] Also can you enquire about whether we can get stats on the data (like Stack was fabled to provide) that make up the site? Would love to work the data to see %age answered questions, question count by tag etc etc [1]: http://serverfault.com/faq

not sure about the stats, but I know that OSQA doesn't offer 'sanitized dumping' - their words not mine () - unlike the SO model

What Matt said. I've been hoping for my rep/karma to clear 500 so I can clean up mis-tagged questions. And now it has. :-)

I fully agree. We do not need loads of tags floating around that get used by only one question.

If we wish to maintain the integrity of this as a useful and reliable resource then I think we should have a minimum limit again. I have noticed that the spinny tag thing on the homepage is not as full as it was before though.

About the spinny tag thingy...from OSQA.... > Good it doesn't use all the tags in the site, otherwise it would be unreadable ;) > The fron page tags are the more recent tags, the other pages display tags that are used in that particular filter, all questions, unanswered, a search result, etc. But there is an optional limit for the number of tags displayed, that can be controlled through the admin panel, which I believe should be set to the default (25) in ask.ssc.

Please turn it off. Data integrity man, data integrity. We don't need 47 different spellings of SQL-Server-2008 or whatever.

Will do - it's also made worse by the fact that we (mods) can't merge or rename tags anymore - I've just got one of the dzone devs to do some obvious mis-spelling ones, and they are looking to incorporate this into future versions for mods.

Oh crud, I hadn't even checked to see if we could fix that. Yikes, not good.
