How do spatial indexes work?

I see lots of settings for spatial indexes, asking me to determine a specific granularity, grid configuration, etc. How do I decide which options I should use?

This is a toughie!

It's not really a question that can be answered simply - but thankfully MSDN provides an excellent, diagram-supported section on how spatial indexes work - that's here and particularly useful is the overview page which is here.

The simplest rule is that the smaller the objects you need to track, or the higher the accuracy of the index in spatial terms, the higher your grid density should be. It really is worth reading the overview page, however, because in this instance a diagram is worth more than 1000 words.
