How to fix a database marked as suspect

I have a database that I haven't checked on for about a week but it contains critical data. Now when I try to log on to it, I just get the name of the database and (suspect).

Please explain what has happened and how to open it again.

Thanks in advance.

A good summary of how to fix this sort of problem is available in this article by Barry:

Sometimes (and depending on your version and what happened to cause it to go suspect)it helps to stop and start the services. Stop first MSSQLServer and then SQL Server Agent. Then restart the services in reverse order.
