Restore of xyz database used to take 20-30mins but recently I enabled backup encryption and now the restore is taking few hours. Is this a expected behavior, if not what could be causing the slow restore?

Your best bet is to monitor the restore computer during that process. Check cpu usage and the disk subsystem. Has the database size increased?
If you have spare hardware, or on your own dev machine, use a compressed and uncompressed backup file and get baseline timings for these.
