upgrading sql server 2000 to 2014

Do we need to stop the SQL Server Services for patching SQL Server 2000 with (SP4)and SQL Server 2008 with (SP2)to upgrading this on SQL Server 2014 ? Please also need help to find how can we stop SQL Services for SQL Server 2000 on Window 2003 if we need to ?

The patching process should stop the service for you. It can't patch it while it's actively running. Note however, it's been a long time since I've had to patch a SQL 2000 box.

You shouldn't need to stop the service to apply a service pack. The patch should do this for you, but it doesn't hurt.

To stop the services, open the services applet from the start menu (in control panel). Find the SQL Server service, which might have a name for named instances, select the service and click stop.
