The site, https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/relational-databases/security/encryption/transparent-data-encryption states, TDE does not provide encryption across communication channels
What does this specifically mean? The database I want to encrypt, will be used as a read-only , reporting database, with some accessing data via an ODBC connection. Will TDE still be okay to implement in this situation? Thank you
That means that TDE does NOT encrypted communication with SQL Server. TDE just encrypts the data at rest. If you want encrypted connections, you'll have to configure SQL Server to facilitate that, which is outside of the TDE realm. An unsecured connection will still be able to read data from a database that using TDE. Yes, you should be able to implement TDE for that type of database without a problem as far as I know. Hope that helps.
