Applying Transaction Logs

Hi if for one database if there are two backup jobs one in Veam and the other in native MSSQL doing Full backups and transaction logs if you need to recover and apply the logs will there be impact as to which logs to apply. For instance if you recover with the Full Backup taken with Veam and you apply the Veam MSSQL taken transaction logs will there be issues regarding the other transaction logs taken natively not being applied and the chain broken?

Depends what settings you have in Veam. If they are set to truncate the log then yes you will have issues as the LSN's will be out of sync. If they are set to not truncate, then veam is doing a copy only backup so wont affect the LSN's, but your manual will so will need to restore the native copies as Veam's LSN will be out of sync.

Personally I like to be in control of my backups so I will always suggest native backups. Then I would use something like Veam to backup the native backups. That way I know what I have backups for and that I know I can restore. Everywhere I have worked it's always been a different team in control of Veam etc so I don't have control. But you need to decide what works best for you, but if you go Veam ensure you backup and truncate the logs or they will grow out of control.

But the Veam backup of tran logs is not copy only and does not truncate logs. Meaning there ate two jobs doing yran log backups veam and another one ot Native Mssql?

in that case if your native transaction logs are truncating the logs then you cannot trust your veam tran logs as the LSNs are out of sync.
