High Volume of Database Mail

Wonder if someone can advise. One of our 3rd party applications is using database mail for mail shots and recently added the ability to have attachments. I first realised this was happening when msdb grew about 10 times faster than usual and the server virtually stopped. The application was sending over 6k mails with attachments. I had to clear out the log files to get everything working again and banned the use of attachments as this was a new feature in the application and they had lived without it. Does anyone have any experience of working with dbmail in this way because I didn't think that was what dbmail was designed for. Thank you.
