Connect to read-only replica from SSMS

I am attempting to connect to an availability group read-only replica through SSMS (version 2016 and 2017). I connect using the listener and add "ApplicationIntent=ReadOnly" to the "Additional Connection Parameters". I've tried this on several servers but I always end up connected to the primary and not the readable secondary. I've tried this with the Readable Secondary set to "Yes' and set to "Read-intent only". I always still end up connected to the primary. Thoughts?

Is the AG group configured for read-only routing? https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/database-engine/availability-groups/windows/listeners-client-connectivity-application-failover#ConfigureARsForROR

Setting up read-only routing was indeed the piece I was missing. Thanks for the link!!
