Data Archival

We have a requirement where we need to archive data from 1 database to another database? What are the specific design principles that should be kept in view while designing the solution.

Up to 2 attachments (including images) can be used with a maximum of 512.0 KiB each and 1.0 MiB total.

Most importantly (and I know it sounds silly to ask but do need to know), why do you need to do this? How big is the table in rows? What is the criteria for whether something should be archived or not? What is the structure of the two tables? How often should the archival process occur? How big will the table get in the next 5 years? Does the archive data need to be "online" accessible along with the non-archived data? Which edition (Standard or Enterprise) of SQL Server do you have? Which version (2005, 2008, 2012, etc, etc) do you have?
