xp_availablemedia command hangs. Killing process stuck in rollback.

I was trying to add a file into the tempdb database. When I clicked on the button to open the physical drive, the window did not open. I waited for more than 10 minutes and thought "It's not going to open". So I closed the [add file] window. This hung SSMS. So I close SSMS completely. Then I noticed that the command was running in the background as xp_availablemedia. I tried to kill this process and then the process showed "killed/rollback" and hung there for more than a day. The killing is not progressing. Can anyone explain this to me and provide me with a solution?

This may not be helpful but I saw something similar (not xp_availablemedia) several years ago. A process seemed to be stuck in the killed/rollback limbo (not consuming any resources from what I recall) and it only went away when the SQL Server service was rebooted.
