Can SSIS establish a remote connection to another server

I am having a theoretical argument with an associate of mine. He is telling me that it is possible for an SSIS 2014 package running on server A to get data from server B to server C without having the data touch server A. I do not believe this is possible as the connection is made to server B and server C from where the SSIS package is running (Server A), so server A would first pull the data to itself, and then push it to the destination. I just can't find anywhere that is says in clear black and white, either case. Can anyone help?

It's entirely possible, just not an actual SSIS feature. your coworker may play the linked server card to prove that ssis can move data from server B to server C without first bringing it across to server A.

I'm not sure about SSIS 2014, but traditionally SSIS employ data flow buffers that reside in the host server (in you case Server A) which bring in data from the source, keep it in memory of the host, do transformations as required and push the data to the destination and freeing up the memory. Thus in my opinion your case holds true - unless SSIS 2014 has a new mechanism in place.
