SS2014 cluster installation error Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Hi, My last installation of SQL Server 2014 SP1 cluster on Windows 2012 R2 was broken by obscure error message: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. just after clicking next on license confirmation window. In installation log folder C:\\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\120\Setup Bootstrap\Log\20160309_160558 I could find following errors: (01) 2016-03-09 16:06:23 Slp: Sco: Attempting to write hklm registry key Microsoft SQL Server to file C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\120\Setup Bootstrap\Log\20160309_160558\Registry_SOFTWARE_Microsoft_Microsoft SQL Server.reg_ And the same for: Registry_SOFTWARE_Microsoft_Windows_CurrentVersion_Uninstall.reg_ Registry_SOFTWARE_Microsoft_MSSQLServer.reg_ Registry_SOFTWARE_Wow6432Node_Microsoft_Microsoft SQL Server.reg_ Registry_SOFTWARE_Wow6432Node_Microsoft_Windows_CurrentVersion_Uninstall.reg_ Registry_SOFTWARE_Wow6432Node_Microsoft_MSSQLServer.reg_ Earlier on I also had messages which suggested problems with changes in windows registry for similar keys: (01) 2016-03-09 14:08:47 Slp: Sco: Unable to open hklm registry key SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server, error The system cannot find the file specified However after finding google suggestions I edited them myself and now only upper errors are thrown. At the end I would like to add that permission's cause of this issues which was also suggested by google seems to be inaccurate in my example, I ran setup.exe with Run as administrator mode and even added user to local administrators. Also cluster validation was run which only detected that user has no access to change domain object but as far I recall from previous cluster SS2014 installation it allowed to go further in installation not break at the beginning. Could you suggest solution to this installation? Cheers, Bartek

I guess I found similar issue to mine: https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/575d3025-69f5-4152-a473-44496b008811/sql-2012-install-fails-with-object-reference-not-set-to-an-instance-of-an-object?forum=sqlsetupandupgrade Since I also noticed in mentioned installation log file tirimmed cluster node name which has 17 characters. Tomorrow I will confirm if it was a case when my admins fix the cluster.

In my example the reason of the error was exactly the same as in the link provided. We trimmed node names to 15 characters, rebuilt cluster and further installation was possible.
