Service packs for previous version of SQL

I did an in-place upgrade from SQL 2012 to SQL 2014. Windows Update is now recommending I install a SQL 2012 service pack. I don't remember seeing such a thing before so maybe something has changed. Surely the upgrade overwrote the SQL 2012 components with SQL 2014 components. Please advise: should I install this service pack and how do you know?

If you run the setup.exe for 2014, click Tools on the left hand side and then choose the 'Installed SQL Server features discovery report', you get a server wide glance of what is installed.

Alternatively, it might be worth manually launching SQL2012SP2, and seeing what components it can identify as still being installed... Also, take a look in the file system to see what's hanging around. It won't necessarily give you an accurate view, but you should get some idea from looking in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\... and the equivalent x86 directory structure. NB: Don't go messing with this stuff manually, though - just use it as a way of getting ideas about what might still be installed.

Hi Ken. Its SQL 2014 build 12.0.4100.1. Windows Update has SQL 2012 Service Packs 1 & 2 as important updates.

Would it be possible to run the 2014 installer and see if there are any components on the system that still require an update?

This is odd. I had a few things I needed to sort out. Now that I've come back to it, the Windows Update recommendations have gone away. I checked the update history in case it installed them automatically when I wasn't looking but no. No updates outstanding. I definitely didn't imagine this! Thanks anyway, guys.
