SSRS programmatically hiding column leaves blank pdf pages

With SSRS 2012, if I programmatically hide a column, how can I shrink the report to match the now smaller tablix width? The web viewer displays the report fine, but when exporting to pdf I get blank pages because the width of the report has to be greater than 11" to accommodate the columns that may be hidden programmatically.
