My personal preference is for mods to mark things as accepted, when they are broadly certain that an answer is correct and the original poster definitely isn't coming back. Given the open-ended nature of some of the questions (and the platform, TBH), marking something as correct is not just a "worked for me", but an indicator of "this is a sane approach to the problem". 90% of the time it's a better experience for anyone who comes to the question later in search. I don't think it's the **ideal** approach, so I would want to be sure a question wasn't getting any more attention from the OP. Unfortunately there's no way to set up custom reminders on the platform Ask SSC runs on, otherwise I'd set up a 3-month "hey, come back and check your question" email or similar. Leaving a comment does send an email to the poster for the most part, so that's still useful.
